Minneapolis workshop wrap-up

Last week I was in Minneapolis for the third time in a period of 6 months, and I’m really loving that city and the people there. I had the honor to speak and teach at the “You don’t know Click” workshop sponosored by WHCC and hosted Chris Meyer of CM Photographics. As many know, we love to teach and I share openly what I have learned in my now 25 year old career. The workshop was also a learning experience for me, not only was I surrounded by a group of super talented photographers who were also teaching but I had a chance to actually learn from them also. We had Matt Radinski, David Beckstead, Mario Masitti with seniors, Heidi Ann shooting fashion, and Critsey Rowe shooting boudior! What a line up, and what a great time…

The subject matter that I was covering was about experimenting with images outside of our normal repertoire. As the students picked images and ideas to challenge themselves, I also started a challenge and an art study for myself. Above and below are some of the results of my first attempts. There is a book called “Crooks like us” which contain criminal images from Sidney Australia from around 1910-1920, and they to me seem hauntingly beautiful. So for this workshop and for the next couple of months I will be attempting to slowly study and shoot images with those feelings and trying to discover what I love about them so much.   The models here: Amber and Peter.  also other than a couple of getting ready shots of them these are the only four frames that I took of them. I shot four frames, I used four frames.

Ashley and Mike.

Jen and Nick.

Amber above and Nick below,  I’m really loving this style of diptychs.

And a little boudior.   Just before Critsey Rowe went on, her model was sitting there all posed by herself and unattended and I had to steal a few images of her.  If you are not familiar with Critsey Rowe’s boudoir images you really should check her site out and Istrongly recommend taking one of her workshops on the subject.

and last, just for fun, a “center of the storm” kind of group shot challenging myself to get it in one frame.

Krystal and Aaron – Engagement session

Welcome to Harbour Island, Bahamas!  I didn’t even have to think twice on why Krystal and Aaron chose this charming location to exchange vows.  Upon arrival to a tiny airport you are promptly wisked away for a two minute cab ride and before you know you are boarding a tiny boat along with a mix of locals and tourists alike.  As you pull up to Harbour island you instantly feel it’s welcoming embrace and the thought of ever leaving is far from your mind.

An engagement session just isn’t complete without a quick stop for a Kalik beer – a little taste of the bahamas

A run around town was a must with all of the colors and textures, how could we not – but what caught my attention?  The locals living the good life and having as much fun as we were.  I simply cannot wait to post the wedding day images… you won’t want to miss out on those!

The Wedding Day!

With the sun shining and the warm breeze, every island God around seemed to have been smiling for this tropical affair

Krystal’s sophisticated style emanates in these images – her dress was gorgeous and her necklace – a simply stunning masterpiece customized just for her!

The men cleaned up pretty darn well with their stylish attire and overall hotness – what can I say, there is something fabulous about formal beachwear, wouldn’t you agree?

And the ladies – they are just a good time. I felt like I was hanging out with the girls all day rather than actually working – this group is so playful and easy going, it’s clear that Krystal and Aaron have surrounded themselves with some fabulous people!

Pink Sands Resort on Harbour Island offered the blissful setting that you see in these images.  The ceremony was just as sweet as the new Mr. and Mrs…

After the ceremony, we ran around for more great portraits and took advantage of the paradise that enveloped us. Just as we began to think we had seen all the beauty that the island had to offer, we arrived at the outdoor dining area where friends and family gathered to celebrate.

The evening continued on with champagne toasts and plenty of dancing. Is there any better way to celebrate two people who are so sweetly in love? I think not. Thank you Krystal and Aaron for allowing us to be a part of your day. Until next time!

What a wedding! Jen and Jeff knew how to pick out a beautiful place for their 3 day event. The One & Only Palmillia is probably one of the best resorts that I have stayed in, no wonder why all the stars stay there when they visit Cabo. With a venue as beautiful as the One & Only Palmillia, stunning details, and a gorgeous couple I can tell you it was very hard to pick out just a few images for the blog. I could have easily posted a hundred more from this one event. Without bogging down this post with too much text I’ll just let you get on with the viewing pleasure that is Jen and Jeff’s wedding, and if you can’t get enough of this cool couple then check out their engagement that we shot some time ago.

ps. did I mention that there were mariachi’s! :)

Speaking – 2011

We spoke a lot in the first half of 2011 and below are the last opportunities to hear us speak or attend a workshop in 2011. The last half pretty much covers from the east coast to the west coast with some quality time in the middle. So three keynote engagements and one last workshop for 2011. We are also using these travel opportunites to restart the Roadside Families project that we did in 2008 (more on that later). Here are the dates:

August 7-9th Wedding Photographic Society WPS convention 2011
Chapel Hill, NC.

EAT ART! Talking about art and how to let it influence us, our style, and our business. I am actually very excited to go to North Carolina and share how our influences have directly impacted our business and work.

.
.

August 14-15
VeryAltF Little Rock, AR

Yes…. we are known for doing some crazy stuff at our veryaltf workshops, and, well, this one is no different. In true Altf fashion this workshop will be held in one of Little Rocks raddest bars. This is our last 2 day workshop in 2011 and most likely our last of these kinds of workshops for quite awhile. So if you’ve ever wanted to get in on the madness which is known as an altF hosted workshop then this is pretty much your last opportunity.

.
.
August 17th Aspire Kansas City

Back to KC! I love Kansas City, and when our good friends Jason & Allison Domingues and Marco & Jan Simonelli ask me to Keynote in their Aspire Kansas City event – I was more than happy to get my ass back to KC for what will definitely be good times. It’s hard to describe what I’ll be discussing in a small sentence but I’ll try. After more than a decade of failure and then finding that magical switch which led to a decade of success, I am going to try to flip your f@#$%ing switch.

.

.
September 25-26 West Coast Collective – PPOC

You know I like to change things up! This is what I’m doing when I cross the border:
“Different all the way Through”, Shaking up the entire wedding and portrait process from start to finish. Market differently, be inspired differently, shoot differently, workflow differently, design and ultimately sell more differently!

.
.
And of course we still offer one on one private workshops at our studio (email us for details)

Restarting Roadside Families

blog post by jmc   ***updated

Roadside Families was a project we did a couple of years ago while on a 9 city speaking tour. It was a “pay it forward” type of project, inspired by David Williams, where we photographed photographers families along our trip and gave them a print to hang on the wall, the only thing they had to agree to was to pay it forward by photographing two other photographers families willing to do the same. It was a huge success which we ended up photographing 37 families (several who had not had a family photograph taken ever or in several years) all around the country. Well the project has been so close to our heart that i’ve just been waiting for an opportunity to restart it.. And that’s exactly what I am doing while i’m out across the country speaking this August.

So if you would like to be a part of the project, below is where i’ll most likely be going through and the dates. You will have to meet me on my route during a time i’ll be sliding through the area. Those who i photograph will be obligated to photograph another photographers family that’s willing to also move the project forward, and also photograph one family that can not afford the services of a professional or has some special need or is deserving in some way. You will also be obligated to give them a “physical” print – ready to hang on a wall.

Email me at 13@altf.com if you would like be considered to have your family photographed along our way. (i’ll also be setting up a facebook page soon for this as well.)   *** updated    Just added a facebook page for the project, please visit and hit the like button…**

Photography & blog post by John Michael Cooper

4,798 miles, over 28 cities and towns from New York to San Diego, this truly was my first coast to coast project.  56 photographers families photographed.  All the images were intended to be simple in nature with very simple lighting.  I used the same retouching recipe that I used on the 2008 Roadside project as well as applied the same rules of posing and arranging. In every image the subjects are connected by touching or handholding in some way, from one side of the family to the other, every single person is connected.  Also my goal was to shoot the whole family once they sat down in the chairs within 30 seconds and with a minimal amount of frames. 90% of sessions lasted less then 30 seconds and my average frame count for the familiy image was around 5 frames.  I had several other self imposed rules for how I shot the families but you’ll have to figure those out yourself by looking at the images. I need to send out some big thank you’s to some special people and sponsors for making this possible. Simply Color Lab for making something that each one of these families will be able to hang on their wall (more on this later). Finao which will be  making one of their ultra cool albums as display of the collection. David Williams for an emotional presentation on the importance of family photography which is the inspiration for the project.  Jason Domingues for helping me with a good part of the driving from Roanoke to Little Rock and single handedly organized the largest group of families in Kansas City..  Also a big thanks to those who donated to help cover our travel costs, you made it possible for me to travel farther and to add in a few extra days.  And lastly a huge thank you for all those that I have photographed and that will be going out and paying it forward, your all the real reason that this project will keep going forward.

September and Alex, Westport Connecticut

I couldn’t imagine a better way to kick off the 2011 Fall Season than with this ultra chic couple, their bulldog Natasha and the seemly setting that Connecticut offers as a backdrop. Add in a few classic cars and JMC is on cloud 9.

This wasn’t a “typical wedding” as we would see it – September and Alex exchanged vows on New Years day in a tropical paradise but now it was time to celebrate and party with their close friends and family in their home town. We were lucky enough to be there to capture the festivities.

Steve D’Agostino and his harmonious band filled the air with classics such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Nat King Cole and kicked off the evening with a pure essence of sophistication and glamour. Truly an unforgettable event.

Fiji, Instagram, and one Special Couple

It was five years ago that our industry companion by trade and friend by choice, Randi of Naakiti Floral told us that she was getting married! And in Fiji! Of course, my first question was “what’s the date?” – my heart dropped when she had a set date that we were already booked for. Who knew a Monday in November would be so popular?
Imagine my excitement when she decided that her five year anniversary would be a great time to return! So we packed up the cameras and headed out for one of the coolest destination shoots to date! Instagram was our weapon of choice to document the travel and details

One fast-ass car ride, some chicken and waffles, a crappy airport bar, crammed 747 and an island hopper complete with what looked like very friendly pilots and we arrived at the Namale Resort in Fiji. Also known as paradise.

The resort itself was amazing but to add the icing to our decadent cake, we stayed in the two bedroom Dream House that properly equipped us with our own private infinity pool, two out door beds, two out door showers and a view that leaves you without words.

Randi and Junior were more than happy to get back into their wedding attire and run around this tropical paradise with us for some memorable photos

It’s not common for John to repeat his concepts but this was an exception. Considering Ophelia is Johns longest study, it was certainly appropriate when this setting presented itself and Randi was completely on board.

Happy Anniversary, Randi and Junior. Thank you for allowing us to capture this occasion and for being such amazing friends. We love you two.

It’s funny how things come together sometimes.  How we are brought together for one reason or another.  I live for moments like this.  Just when I believe that my job couldn’t be any better, that I have some how maxed out my luck for the year… we are handed a chance of a lifetime.  A gift to help others.  A chance to make someone smile.

Being a member of the Digital Wedding Forum is essential to what we do.  We must share, discuss and connect with other photographers around the world to progress and grow in our business.  It’s a complete honor that the CEO of the Digital Wedding Forum, Jeff Caplan, continues to contact us year after year and ask that we not only attend his annual convention but also speak and share our knowledge.  It’s truly humbling and rewarding at the same time.  This year there were layers of icing added to our perfectly formed DWF Convention cake.  Not only did we speak once, but twice – the second was a truly unique opportunity.  The convention was being held in New Orleans and this year they were on the hunt for three couples that truly deserved some great photos.  They were looking for New Orleans couples that lost their wedding photos in hurricane Katrina and we were the lucky kids who got to photograph these deserving couples.

In an additioanl attempt to have some attendees that were interested in also hanging out with us and learning a few of our tricks we took off in the streets of New Orleans and had a blast with these couples.  Below are the couples and a few inserts from their new wedding album designs.  Please see below for a bit more of the action…

April and Darryl

Holly and Tim

Katy and Bill

I feel so lucky to have met these three couples – with all they have been through they were not only grateful but so hospitable – instead of feeling like a lost puppy in a strange place they opened their minds and hearts and showed us true southern hospitality – something this west coast girl is foreign to.  I also met some great photographers that I can now call friends.  Harlin Miller – a local New Orleans photographer showed up to take part in the action – not with a camera in hand but with a mind full of knowledge and ideas and navigated us to exactly what we wanted to see.  Tabitha Clarke, my long lost sister who not only carried a plethora of equipement and umbrellas but also carried the emotional support that I need when taking on large tasks that I can potentially really screw.  I also will never forget her soulful voice singing beautifully out loud and without hesitation as JMC and I realized we did not have any “first dance” songs cued when the time came.  She is a true angel.  As I would look around from time to time I loved seeing friends like Jen Kelly with her arms full of umbrellas, shoes, bags and lighting.  Not to mention, all of the talented photographers that came out and played and supported us and shared their images with these amazing couples.

It goes without saying but I am certainly still going to say:  Thank you…..
Thank you to Jeff Caplan of the Digital Wedding Forum for bringing us all together.
Thank you, Deborah Molique for birthing the idea and making it actually happen.
Thank you to Azura Albums for making these couples brand new albums for them
Thank you to Animoto for putting together slide shows of these images
Thank you to Cat Vo for making these beautiful ladies even more beautiful on their “new” wedding day
Thank you to John’s Tuxedo’s and Pearls Place for dressing these couples
Thank you to the Local ABC News and ABC National for covering the event and sharing the love

And thank you to you, the person reading this blog for taking the time and hopefully being inspired to Pay it Forward – you get back so much more than one could imagine.

Courtney and Aaron are amazing people… I just need to say that right off the bat. We were thrilled when she mentioned that their favorite place in the world was their cabin in Southern Utah! Although we are hustling through a relentless season with little time to spare, I made the executive decision that a day trip to and from Utah was not too bad of an idea. And it was beautiful… the surroundings, the air, the temps (well below Las Vegas’ current average). It was just what we needed – then you add in a ravishing couple that we had full access to photographing and we are on cloud 9…

Bonneville – Speed Week 2012

photography and blog post by john michael cooper
My personal photography project for this year was to skip burning man and instead spend some time ironically on a different type of dry lake bed, The Bonneville Salt Flats. It’s been about a decade long dream to get up to the salt flats to attend the annual Speed Week for land speed racing. Although it’s not Black Rock City there is a lot of art there and great people to meet. The art of Bonneville is all about the art of the car and the art of speed, and it has been my main motivation to experience it at least once. Like any dry lake or flats there is just a surreal vibe while you are out there with so much negative space all around with brilliant white clouds and amazing blue skies that meet the flat horizon.

Not all of the cars were there to run down the “black line”, there happens to be all sorts of “ratrods” that gather there during speed week from all across the country. The town of Wendover pretty much turns into a ratrod city. Pretty cool.

There are so many different types of cars and classes from motorcycles to streamliners to my favorite – the “belly tankers”.  Built around vintage military under wing fuel tanks, these lakesters have been making runs down Bonneville since the 40’s and 50’s. I think i want one for myself, i can just see one of these parked in the studio.

Ok i’m a people photographer, portraiture is just in my nature, so i had to stop these two cowboys and make a portrait, especially since they were driving around in a ’52 Caddy.

Houston for a wedding? Of course! July… well… only for really cool people! Nicole and Cham were well worth the blood, sweat and tears that Houston Summer is capable of bringing on. In all actuality – it wasn’t as bad as one would think and if our clients are up for it, so are we! Please allow me to take you through this fabulous event!

A little play time with the details is always a favorite of ours…

I always feel a little “special” when I really have the opportunity to get to know our clients prior to the wedding… you get a totally different insight to who they are, their relationship and an over all perspective of what their life consists of.  Take it one step further and actually be allowed to call a client a “friend” and I remember why I love what we do so much.. we are very lucky to call Nicole and Cham friends and I do not only love these two portraits (top and bottom) for the apparent reasons… i love them for the people that are in them and the fact that they both look so amazing on their wedding day together.

Introducing Channing and Amanda’s wedding…. Chamanda, if you will. We were thrilled to meet this playful couple a few miles from both of our homes in Fajardo, Puerto Rico for their wedding weekend. We are fortunate to have become familiar with this couple as we have kept in contact over the years photographing siblings and friends weddings and events and we knew just how fabulous this three day event would be but nothing really predicts how great things will come together until you are there seeing it with your own eyes or, at least through our eyes.  Welcome to El Conquistador, a Waldorf Astoria Resort in Puerto Rico…

A gorgeous bride… a stunning dress.. an amazing location – Whit and Lui certainly know how to put on a breath-taking event! Perhaps that has a little to do with the fact that Whitney hears details, stories… the good, the bad and the over-the-top as she styles her own clients that just happen to be brides seeking One Luv Bridal to be made beautiful for their own special day. We are so lucky to know and work with this talented hair and make up stylist and we were completely honored to be chosen to photograph her wedding as she finally took on the roll of the bride. And an amazing bride she was!

Her day began just a hop, skip and a jump away in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico where (ironically enough) the three of us had found ourselves 5 years prior for mutual clients, Lausanne and Jimmy’s wedding. Whitney and Lui chose the Fairmont Mayakoba for their wedding and reception – JMC and I were not complaining!

Badgley Mischka and Monique Lhuillier made their appearance in the form of one stunning pair of shoes and a dress that still has me in awe..
If this dress doesn’t prove how incredibly brilliant Whitney is then let’s chat about the floral for a moment. Whit wasn’t just going to settle for whatever was handed to her on her wedding day – she arranged for Randi of Naakiti Floral to travel to Playa Del Carmen to create the perfect floral and decor for her day.  If you know Whit, you know that this bouquet is absolutely perfect for her.

How gorgeous are these bridesmaid dresses from Bella Bridesmaid in Las Vegas!? The calm before the storm…. literally this time! We got a bit of rain which created great light and drama for the images. Again, JMC and I were not complaining! Not to mention that rain is considered good luck on your wedding day!  And here you will see more of Randi’s gorgeous floral..

We loved this tropical wedding and still had a blast taking the “formal” photos

We took a calming boat ride to the reception area where the party went strong!  You will just have to take my word on the amazing dance moves we saw that evening but one of my favorite details of the day? Whit and Lui’s custom cake topper which should remind you of a really cool scene from the desert

A few days later the four of us and one accommodating golf cart driver took advantage of the area and grabbed these really cool portraits of the newlyweds

Possibly my all-time favorite scene…

Congratulations Whitney and Lui – thank you for allowing us to capture your day and memories through our lens.  We had an amazing time with you and we look forward to many more wonderful things to come for you two.  We love you guys and couldn’t be happier for you.  Super hugs to you both! xxx – Dalisa

YES – we will travel across the country just to photograph an engagement session, especially if it’s an amazing city like Chicago! Once I found out that Robert and Samm lived in Chicago I was pretty quick to suggest the session there. With Samm and Robert as my guides we pretty much covered the city from the lake to the river to downtown and even a few on lower Wacker. If you have yet to visit Chicago, please enjoy the brief taste from the images below of Samm and Roberts engagement session!

Photography by Dalisa and John Michael Cooper, Blog post by Dalisa

It’s always a double edged sword when a family member marries – as a photographer I am torn between the slight chance that I might just one day get to attend a wedding as a guest or the opportunity to share what I work so hard for with my family. Although this wedding was bittersweet, I am so happy that I had the chance to photograph my cousin Derick’s wedding to his new bride for many, many reasons. The importance of photographs and documenting our lives really hits home with this wedding and leaves me so completely content and fulfilled to know the importance of what it is that we are doing on a daily basis. Family and friends are so important and the moments that we share with them will echo through photographs for the rest of our lives. Allow me to introduce you to my newest family member and cousin, Heather as she prepares for a full day of love, laughter and DRINKS!

The ceremony took place in Dana Point, CA on a high point over looking the ocean – ironically this is the exact same location that another cousin of ours wed 21 years ago. I absolutely love this moment between Heather and her father before they head down the aisle….

After the ceremony we had plenty of time to run around SoCal for some great photos of these two and of course, I recruited the help of my super talented husband, John Michael Cooper for the portraits!

The reception brought the blending of two very different families, traditions as well as a lot of laughs, dancing, singing and drinking! What a celebration! I’m so thrilled to Congratulate these two and to welcome a whole new chapter to our family! XOXO – Dalisa
